In today’s busy world, it may seem impossible to keep your family close to you. But, it doesn’t have to be! There are many ways that you can keep a close relationship with your children and your spouse. You will have to work to keep a good, strong relationship, but the end result – a close-knit family – will be worth any kind of sacrifice. Below check our three things you can do right now to help keep your family close.

 

  1. Eat dinner together. Try to eat dinner together as much as possible. Families that sit down together at night to talk about the day end up sharing more and being more open about any problems that are faced. This is a place where your children can learn to trust you and will tell you important information.
  2. Set aside family time. Make time once a week to do activities together as a family. This is a set time every week when your family knows it’s family time.  For example, on Wednesday nights, you could have game night. No other activities or obligations should interfere with family night.
  3. Talk. It’s seems so simple, but talking to each other is often overlooked. Take the time to talk to your spouse and your children. Ask about their day, talk about your fears, and find out how you can help them to be more confident in the world. Talking builds trust which will go a long ways in having a close family.

What to Know About Divorce

You are thinking about filing for divorce. It’s a tough thing to go through, and everyone who has been through it can sympathize. You don’t want to, but you have reached the point where your marriage isn’t worth saving. You have to know that divorce is not a cut-and dry-matter.

If you haven’t, then you should start thinking about it. Also, a woman should not assume that because she is the mother, she will get custody. Laws and courts will always look out for the best interest of the children.

In the end, the best thing you can do is to talk about things beforehand. Keeping everything civil and finding an agreement without the courts will always be the best way for a couple to get what they want out of a divorce agreement. You have to know that divorce is always a gamble. Get things squared away before you walk into a court of law.

The Trying Threes

Everyone talks about the terrible twos, but what about the trying threes? What’s so trying about three-year-olds? They need constant attention and want to get into everything. They try their parents’ patience. So what can you do to help these children?

Move Things out of Reach

One thing you can do is be sure before you go to bed to put things out of reach of these little hands. Three-year-olds tend to come out their beds, either during the night or in the morning before others are up, and get into things. Be sure that nothing is left on kitchen counters, coffee tables, or kitchen tables that you don’t want little hands to find. Also, put stools in places that can’t be found so these little busy bodies can’t use them to get higher.

Give Them Alternatives

If your little one tends to get up before you do and get into foods they shouldn’t, try putting out snacks on the table that you’re okay with him or her eating, so they don’t get into other foods and make a mess.

Patience

Although these sweethearts try your patience, take the opportunity to increase your patience levels. Also, be sure to set aside as much time as you can spend with your little one just you and him or her. Read books, play with play dough, play Candy Land, build towers, and pretend you’re pirates. This will make both you and your darling feel happy.

It may be a trying time, but remember that your child doesn’t mean to be annoying or frustrating. He or she is just trying to understand this world.

How to Soothe Your Newborn Baby

One of the hardest parts about having a newborn baby is keeping him happy so you can get other things done, including being able to sleep. There are things you can do, however, to comfort your little one so she’s content for a longer period of time. When it comes to newborns, the best thing to do is provide things that make him feel like he’s back in the womb.

Swaddling

Swaddling is a great way to calm a baby and make her feel secure. This is because it imitates the warmth and confines of the womb. There are many techniques for swaddling, but the important thing is to make it tight enough that the arms aren’t able to move. Newborns can’t control their arm movements, which can lead to them whacking themselves in the face or scratching their face. This can upset newborns and lead to crying.

Rocking, Swinging, and Vibrating

The next thing that can help is a swinging motion. This imitates how a newborn feels while in the womb when his mother is walking around. The easiest way to accomplish this is through a baby swing or bouncer. If possible, swaddle your baby before putting her in the swing or bouncer. Combining the two will make him feel even more secure.

Pacifiers

If your newborn likes a pacifier, it’s a great way to help keep her calm. The sucking motion is instinctual and many babies suck on their thumbs or fingers while in the womb.

There are other ways to soothe babies in addition to these techniques. Try different things to find what works best for your newborn baby.

Staying Close to Your Spouse

One thing that fairy tales don’t tell you is finding your true love is only half the battle. Once you’re married, you need to keep your marriage strong and it’s hard work. Here are a couple things you can do to strengthen your marriage.

Date Night

The first thing you need to do is have date night once a week. This is one night where it’s just you and your spouse — no distractions. If you don’t have money for a babysitter, consider finding another couple that you can switch babysitting duties with. One couple goes out on Friday and the other goes out on Saturday. Then switch every other week.

Love Languages

Another thing you can do is learn about love languages. There are five: affection, service, words, gifts, and time. If you know what your spouse’s love language is, you can speak that language. You’ll also understand when your spouse is trying to say he or she loves you. For example, if your spouse’s love language is service, then when he or she cleans the kitchen, it’s his or her way of saying, “I love you!”

Communication

A big thing in marriage is communicating and knowing what your spouse would like communicated. If something is bothering you, then take time to talk to your spouse about it rather than letting it continue to bother you. Take time each day to tell the other person what happened to you that day. When he or she tells you of his or her day, really listen. You should know the names of co-workers and friends, what project is going on at work, etc.

When it comes to learning about money, you shouldn’t wait until your kids are grown to help them understand the basics about money management. If you do, you will likely find that your children don’t understand things like restraint, budgeting, or how to find the best prices. Here are some suggestions on how to teach your children about money management:

Be an Example

One of the best ways to teach them is just to be an example. Let your children see you budgeting, talk to them about how you’re saving money for the next family vacation, and show your children how you compare prices as you shop to get the best deals. Also, show restraint. Even if you want something, talk to your kids about how you’ll have to save up first in order to buy that item.

Establish Limits

When it comes to spending money, establish limits for your kids — whether it’s for a birthday gift or buying treats. For example, if you give your kids money to spend at the mall and at the end of the day, your child is out of money but wants a smoothie at the food court, let him or her know that once the money is gone, it’s gone.

Savings and Goals

When you’re child is old enough, start with an allowance. Talk to your kids about what it means to save money and how saving can help your child buy a more expensive item. Help your child set long-term and short-term goals that will help teach the principle of saving.

By teaching them now, they’ll be better financially in the future.

Protecting Your Kids from the Sun

With summer here in full swing, the sun is at its hottest, which can only mean one thing: sunburns. Did you know that having just a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s chances of developing skin cancer? As a parent, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your children are protected from the sun as you go out to have some fun in the sun this summer.

Sunscreen

The most obvious form of protection from the sun is the use of sunscreen. The best SPF is between 30 and 50. It’s been found that anything above 50 isn’t likely to give you additional protection. Apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and then every two hours after that you are in the sun. Also, apply the sunscreen thickly to get the best protection. Get broad spectrum sunscreen to ensure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Sunglasses

You might not think about it, but sunglasses that have 100% UV protection is like sunscreen for your eyes. It’s important to protect your children’s eyes from the sun so they’ll less likely have eye problems when they get older, including cataracts.

Avoid the Midday Sun

The sun’s rays are strongest at midday. Where possible avoid going outside in the middle of the day when your skin is most likely to be harmed by the sun’s rays. If you do go out during the middle of the day, try to find areas that are shaded such as parks with lots of shade trees around the jungle gym.

It’s hard to see your child in pain; sunburns are completely preventable with the right protection.
